One Room Challenge, Wk 3: My Boys' Bathroom- Shower Curtain & Vanity Prep
/Hmm, I’m sad to say I lost a little momentum this week... I think I wore myself out the week before, pushing so hard to get this design settled. No excuses, but I was just tired after we put the boys to bed at night time. I’ve also been a bit distracted between my car stalling out on me 2 mornings in a row, making returns from the last project I worked on, and most of all- mentally preparing to pack for our getaway this weekend. Just like last challenge, I’m going to be away for 1 whole week of the challenge- AHHH. Except this time, my hubby won’t be staying at home to work as my contractor- Lol.
In case you were busy this week:
Week 1- Inspiration & Before Photos
Week 2- Mood Board & Design Plans
Let me tell you a little story about a designer who wants a gold shower curtain at a steal of a price, and the illusions she let herself believe: I was inspired by a gold geometric shower curtain that I saw at Target, but the scale of the design was way too small. It would clash with my raindrop wall decals, and it wasn’t making the impact I exactly wanted. Then I found a large-scale chevron pattern, gold shower curtain on Amazon for just $19.00- WHA? (For reference, other sites were $65 - $80). The description said the material was a microfiber. I was apprehensive so I ordered it the next day to make sure I would like it.
I loved the metallic gold, but it was a little more “plastic-ey” than I was hoping for. I searched again and strongly considered a DIY curtain to get my desired look. Then, I miraculously found an ALMOST identical curtain for the EXACT same price. I thought the heavens were shining down on me. I ordered it right away! I didn’t care for the white curtain hooks, but I could use my own.
I was on Cloud 9 when my Amazon order arrived two days later. I saw the delivery man arrive during lunch, and snatched it up right away. I pulled it out of the envelope, and stalled a moment….Omg- it was the SAME EXACT curtain. Oh, I felt like such a dope! The sales associate inside of me teased, “Of course it’s the same curtain for these are price. What were you thinking?” Uch- I was so hopeful that I let my judgement get clouded. The second listing described it as a polyester, instead of a microfiber. Oh well. Truth is, I never even hung up the original curtain to see how it really looks. I’ll do that, and if I like it, I’ll keep the curtain with the gold rings :) I’d love to say I’m going to DIY, but if I can avoid another time commitment, while going out of town for a week, it would be better from a project management standpoint. We’ll see!
I started the vanity prep during nap time 2 days ago. I researched how to paint oak cabinets from two other bloggers At Home With Ashley and Lemons, Lavender and Laundry. After reading their blogs with my hubby, I was feeling brave enough to tackle this project- thanks ladies!
First step? Wipe down the cabinets with TSP or a soap and water combo. I hope dish soap does the trick, because that’s what I did. If it’s good enough for my dirty dishes, I hope it’s adequate for my vanity.
I wiped down the face of the cabinets and around the moulding details. Then I pulled the drawers out a bit and opened the doors to wipe down the frame.
As I was wiping down the frame of the vanity, I couldn’t help but look inside (my messy cabinet). Wouldn’t it be nice if I painted the interior for a polished look? If I have the time, I think I would paint it the same light grey as my walls. That would help brighten it up, don’t you agree?
My hubby bought the sand paper, and managed to start one one drawer while my toddler was relaxing on his potty, but that’s about it. I was hoping to have it sanded, filled, and sanded again before leaving on our getaway, but I don’t think it’s going to happen- darn.
Just In: Just as I’m finishing this post, my hubby busted out the sander and got a LITTLE more done!
We leave for Redmond, Oregon tomorrow morning, right after breakfast, as long as we get the car all packed up after the kiddos go to sleep. We’ll be staying there for a week with my mom and grandma. It makes the 3 hour drive with 2 little ones more tolerable- Lol. But, I’ll still be brainstorming and online shopping for cabinet hardware, thinking over the vanity light, and looking for storage solutions while I’m away. There’s no time to waste with just 3 more weeks to go!! This week I’m no. 187- moving on up! Keep up with me on my Insta Stories!!
