One Room Challenge, Wk 5: My Boys' Bathroom- Demo & Details
/That’s right- It’s Week 5 of 6, and we finally had Demo Day! (Eeeek). Some things got done sooner than I planned, and other things have taken longer to find the time to do, so if I think about it, we’re probably only a week or so behind schedule- Lol.
In case you were busy this week:
Week 1- Inspiration & Before Photos
Week 2- Mood Board & Design Plans
Week 3- Shower Curtain & Vanity Prep
Week 4- Vanity Lights & Hardware
I was planning to get blue towels to match the vanity paint color, but I’ve had a change of heart. Because my bathroom is so small, I think it would create a larger illusion if the towels blend with the walls. I purchased several bath towel samples (AKA wash cloths) to try out at home.
Time to modernize this framing job from the 80s! If you remember from Wk 1- This Noah’s Ark artwork is the inspiration for the whole bathroom design. I hurried to Michael’s on Friday because I was anxious about getting a custom mat. Surprisingly, a 16”x20” standard mat fit my frame, but unfortunately it cropped down my art at least 2”… I asked the framing associate for a white mat, and he tried to encourage me to get a double mat. I considered it, but with budget and my original design intent, I decided to stick with a crisp white mat, estimated at two weeks delivery- Nooooooo. I said that wouldn’t work, and he looked in back for what they might have on hand to cut. Thankfully he found white mat at what? Half the price! Yes, Please!! (I was distracted by my fussy baby, but always remember to ask for a more cost friendly option if you’re on a budget. Many times, there is a less pricey option.) He’s keeping the frame for a good clean up because they glass was terribly dirty after soo many years. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
I expedited my order of the raindrop wall decals that I’m placing above the dado rail. I was teetering on the height of my dado rail, but came to the conclusion of using the top shelf of the toilet unit as my guide. I found my level and drew my line at 50.25”H around the room. I’m painting a gold band around the room to create the illusion of real moulding. I decided to do this because the line goes right through my vanity mirror.
I purchased all the vanity hardware at Home Depot, but I’m still on the hunt for a new toilet paper holder. I have the Darcy Towel Holder, and am still looking for a toilet paper holder with 2 brackets and similar round design details.
Finding the sink accessories has been the hardest part of this whole project- I can’t believe it! I was hoping to find a set in plastic because the bathroom is for my baby boys. However, I also want it to look stylish because it is also our guest bathroom. Ideally I do not want a flat “plastic” looking finish. I would love a wood or stone texture. And I would LOVE if the metal details were brushed nickel or gold/brass- not polished chrome. Am I asking for too much? (Maybe so?) These are my top contenders at the moment, but we’ll see what happens over the next few days.
I chose to have a dusty blue grey paint color for the vanity to tie in with the colors and frame of the Noah’s Ark artwork. Luckily I pulled several swatches from my paint deck before I left it at Michael’s for the custom mat. But then, of all crazy things, I totally gelled with the dusty blue of drumroll….. an airplane barf bag! That’s what I brought with me to Home Depot to select my paint color- Lol. I grabbed multiple swatch cards so I can tape them together to make larger samples. You can’t get a great representation of a paint color with a 1”x2” sample. I grab 4 of each color that I like, so don’t be shy about taking what you need. It’s a great first step to narrow down paint colors if you don’t want to purchase too many paint testers. It’s also easy to move your large paint sample around your room to see it in different areas.
This was the quickest paint decision of my life- SERIOUSLY. I chose Skinny Jeans by Behr. I thought it looked a bit light when I set it on top of the vanity, but when I realized the vanity light will not shine as brightly on it because it is not going on the countertop, I felt it would be dark enough. My husband literally just finished the first coat- YAY.
I just took of the decorative shower curtain. Even though I’m excited to hang the new one, I couldn’t help but be a bit sad about taking this one down. I purchased it for our last home, when we first moved to Portland. Do you get attached do your decor, as well? These are probably the last progress picture I’ll share with you before the BIG REVEAL. Look at all that potential * Wink wink *
Now you can finally see our demo. Nothing crazy, but my hubby removed the sink and vanity top yesterday. He also tore out the base moulding and transition strip along the tub. The toilet cabinet needed to come out for other refinishing in the room, but we’ll put it back with new hardware.
See you at the finish line. The big reveal is next week!!
