Black & White with Hearts Nursery

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, I think we’re all a bit gaga for heart decorations right now. Instagram and Pinterest are a beautiful array of Valentine’s DIYs and delicious recipes. Well, I wanted to channel this lovey time of year in a different way. I thought this would be the perfect challenge to design a black and white nursery inspired by hearts this February. Intrigued to see what I came up with?

I popped onto Etsy to look for some artwork to inspire this nursery design. I searched for quite a while, and finally felt an attraction to this printable by thunderandfrost . Yes, these hearts are black, but they also feel celebratory, floating up into the air. For some reason I just pictured it with a wide, white matte in a gold frame. I lived with white walls in rentals for so long, that I’m usually inclined to paint walls. I didn’t want the wall color to distract from the bold black and white scheme, so I found this lovely hazy lavender shade. It’s a wonderful compliment to my gold frame because purple and yellow are complimentary colors on the color wheel. This means they are opposite each other, and create drama. However, in this very muted tone, it plays more of a supportive role than you might think.

Quite a design, if I do say so myself! Even though this nursery is inspired by Valentines day, i didn’t want to go heart-crazy. I fell in love with this ABC and I <3 U printable by MartaMunte right away. Take a closer look at the letters highlighted in gold- it’s just so sweet. From there I started my search for black and white crib bedding. It was a bit of a struggle to find the perfect pattern to go with hearts, and wasn’t too black. I don’t know why, but I just wouldn’t want to put my baby down in a black “hole”…..Maybe I’m thinking too much about it, but oh well! I love this almost cross-hatch print by Oilo. I kept the larger furniture pieces simple in design because I knew this black and white color palette was going to create a lot of drama on its own. A white crib and changing table with a black chair was a good base to the soft furnishings I was going to layer in to my design.

DRAMA. Yes, this nursery definitely has drama! But it’s also glamorous, feminine, and sweet. The hazy-lavender walls wrap the room in a soft blanket ( You know what I mean, Lol). But the bold striped rug really packs a punch, and holds the hole room together. I was a bit daring, but added another striped drapery to the window. Some might think this is too much, but the stripes are softened in the folds of the fabric, and they make the walls look 20 feet tall!

Now back to the glamour I was referring to: The gold accents are sprinkled throughout to keep your eye moving around the nursery. I can imagine that light reflects beautifully on the stacked-ball details of this floor lamp. I’d also been waiting for the right occasion to use a gold, moroccan pouf, and this was definitely it. A bit atypical, but it just felt right! And I had to add this sweet heart pillow with pompoms, and the XO lumbar pillow. (Shhh….I have a secret crush on accent pillows.)

This black and white nursery was meant to be! This design is modern but still has the glamour of Art Deco styling. I’m reminded of designer Dorothy Draper when I look at the bold window treatments. I’m almost a bit surprised how chic this room turned out to be. Most of all, I see a sweet baby girl in her crib, smiling back at her overjoyed parents. This is a nursery filled with love, and I hope you love it too.
